Saturday 11th June - Sunday 26th 2022

With 28 walks on offer across the length and breadth of the North Wessex Downs, the Walking Festival is a celebration of the stunning landscapes, gorgeous scenery and top-class walking country that this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) has to offer – and its 50th Anniversary as a protected landscape.

There are opportunities for you to seek out wildlife, history or culture, visit a farm, follow an accessible trail, picnic with the family, improve your navigation skills or simply to soak up the views from the top of the downs. Many of the walks are free. Join the knowledgeable and welcoming guides to discover more as they bring alive some of their favourite places in the North Wessex Downs.

Walk and Cruise along the Kennet and Avon Canal

Thursday 16 June 2022, 2.15pm - meet at Hungerford Wharf

The North Wessex Downs Landscape Trust and the Kennet and Avon Canal Trust have teamed up to offer a rather special afternoon’s combined walk and canal boat trip on The Rose of Hungerford, as part of the North Wessex Downs Walking Festival.

The walk and boat trip will start at Hungerford Wharf, the home mooring of this popular trip boat, and will proceed westwards.

You can choose whether to walk the whole way along the tow path, stay on board the boat for the full trip or do a combination. At suitable points, such as at locks and bridges those who are walking can join the cruisers, and those cruising can opt to walk. On board drinks and light refreshments can be bought, and there is a toilet.

After skirting Froxfield we shall arrive at Little Bedwyn where the boat will turn around and return to Hungerford. To book your place visit the Walking Festival web page.

Getting to Know the North Wessex Downs

Monday 1 - Friday 5 August 2022 - Marlborough College

Marlborough is at the heart of the North Wessex Downs, a nationally designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and, in part, a World Heritage Site. Yet what makes the area so special? Is it the landscape or humankind's impact on it over the past 5,000 years? With talks, videos, drives and short walks, this course seeks to provide some answers while illustrating the wide variety of natural qualities to be found in the region.

This course is being run as part of the Marlborough College Summer School programme.

For more information and to book a place, please visit the Marlborough College Summer School web page.
